Hi everyone,

Just registered as a member not too long ago. I was amazed and inspired by how some guys mod their stuff. Really in details man! So decided to join in the fun with you guys.

Bought a M16A2 from BT last Sunday and spent almost a whole week of modification to 'transform' the toy-looking rifle into something more realistic-looking.

Areas modified:
1) Dust Cover - Able to open/close
2) Charging Handle - Added details
3) Front Sight - Made from epoxy putty
4) Bolt Carrier - PVC tube
5) Rear Side - Made from epoxy putty
6) Metal Gun Barrel - From hardware shop at S$1.70/-
7) Added weight to 3.6 kg by Plasticine

Pls see images.

Hope to exchange pointers with those guns fanatics after viewing, many thanks.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the viewing and encouragement.

My steps/costs for the mods:

1)Bought one M16A2 from BT @ S$22.90/-

2)Unscrew and split the rifle carefully (was impatient and nearly created a big crack near the upper receiver part)

3)Dust Cover: Use a hot knife (S$20/-) to cut out the dust cover on both sides. On the dust cover, carefully cut and create a space in the centre
-Put epoxy putty (S$8/-) on the left side of the rifle to conceal the hole left over from the cutout (most daunting job)
-Sand off the dust cover’s hole and dust cover itself until surfaces are flat
-Aligned properly and hand drill (S$10/-) two small holes at the bottom corner
-Purchase small diameter rubber tube (S$2/-), thin copper wire (S$1/-) and pin (S$2/-) from hardware shop
-Coil the copper wire around the centre of the rubber tube to create the spring. Measure, cut and glue the rubber tube onto the dust cover and insert with the pin from left end through the two small holes for flipping purpose
-Job completed

4)Front Sight: Drill or melt a hole in the centre of the front sight.
-Sand off the hole till surface is flat
-Use epoxy putty to fill up the hole and create the 4 small curves by using a half-round needle file when the putty is semi-hardened. Once the putty is fully hardened, sand down to flush with the surface. Use a scrap plastic material (I used scrap parts from my aircraft models) to create the front sight post and putty it onto the surface.
-Job completed

5)Rear Sight: I just cut out the shape of the rear sight from scarp parts with 90 degree angle and paste onto the rifle

6)Charging Handle: Cross reference with diagrams from internet and cut out the charging handle’s latch with plastic materials
- File and sand to the desired shape to match with the handle

7)Rifle Barrel (Optional): Purchase a 17-18mm diameter metal tube from hardware shop (S$1.70/-).
-Cut out the tip of the rifle’s barrel and glued to the metal
tube

8)Bolt Carrier: Purchase a 20mm PVC pipe (S$2/-) and cut pipe to length.
    - use lighter or heat gun to create the depression
    - Hand drill the four small holes
    - File for the multiple lines using half-round needle file

9)Spraying:
Body: RJ Metallic Black – Dull lacquer (remember to cover up the grip and butt during spraying)
Butt stock and Grip: Flat black (cant remember which brand liao)
Barrel, Dust Cover, Magazine, Bolt Carrier
: Airbrush with mixture of black & silver paints

That’s all man. Spent around min S$80 (less labour cost..haha) of course some items can be reused again. Will start off with M16A1 carbine rifle next month hopefully. Will take photos for the whole process for sharing.

remove the rails on top and below of the M16 handguard and you have a very very nice rifle already lol.
