This issue is worth repeating, F**king New Guy (FNG) survival guide:

READ THE CODE OF CONDUCT.

Some of us take a perverse pleasure in removing members from our boards. Try not to give us an excuse.

SEARCH BEFORE YOU ASK. Our built-in search function and Google are the best way to find your answers.

Also check the stickied topics in the relevant subforums before you post a new thread asking a question.

We've got almost 3 years of posts here, so we've probably already got the answer you were looking for.

LURK MORE. Read, read, read, read, read.
By the time you make your first post, you should have a pretty good idea of whether or not we're going to bust you about it.

DON'T "Kao Pei" THE MODS. This forum is not a democracy.

It is a totalitarian dictatorship except you won't be executed in Real Meat Life in 101 gruesome ways.

If someone wants to ban you because you tried behave like a "Xia Lan Kia" or "Pai Kai",  that's just how it works.

That will be a Trade Secret.

In SG's competitive climate, it is seriously dumb beyond dumb to tell the world what anyone is gonna do.

This is not a "Tom & Jerry" cartoon.

This is Real Life, Real World.
No Save Game, No Restart Game and No Cheat Mode.

That is the HARD TRUTH.

Besides there is an unspoken rule on showing Minors ( below 15) as Soldiers.

It is called "Child-Soldiers."

It is a HOT & Sensitive topic in the United Nations.

You can have as a hobby but portraying correctly in media remains as a IFFY matter.

Well then, since this topic is already up and running, rather than locking it might as well make full use of it.  Grin

I'll do this topic in sequence ranging from categories to genre to making a movie. I'll do it slowly.
Anyone who can share your experience can hijack this thread I guess? (Like me Bua hwa hwa hwa hwa)

Categories of film (not genre)
-Full feature
-Short film
-Teaser
-Advertisement
-Spoof
-Educational
-Viral

Before making a movie/short, one must first review a few things. (For amateurs. Not professionals. Professionals have a different list)

1- How developed is your story and in what kind of setting will it be in. (CG intensive? Is the script already laid out? Storyboard and animatics are in to "preview" the project? Remember, not everyone will have the same vision as you so it is good to have either a Storyboard or Animatics laid out for them to get a brief understanding of what you're looking at)
2- Budget of your project (How far are you willing to go for this? Is it for fun? Competition? Possible Publishing?)
3- Casting, Crew, Talents & Equipments (This would usually layout the foundation of the quality & standard of your movie/short)
4- Casting, Crew & Talents' time table (You need a fixed set of dates to get your project running. Not last minute decisions)
5- Dateline / Target
6- Fallback plans (Especially when you realize that what you do is not possible considering factors like budget &/or location)
7- Organizational Hierarchy (Never ever assign ALL the tasks to yourself. Trust me)

example of animatics

note: You don't have to draw SUPER well. Stick figures in photographs works too. No right or wrong

Oh, I believe you.

It is just those immature ones who wanna show their pile of MW3 or MOH zany adventures in film format.

*Shoot M4*  3 mushroom cloud
*Shoot M60*  300 men somersault and dies.
*Shoot Bazooka* Planet Explodes.

Story creation

At most times, a good story starts with a "eurika!"
It is very very very hard to get an idea out on the fly.

When creating a story, one must understand that the character do not grow into the story. Instead, the story should revolve around the character.
Most of the time, too many restrictions are put leaving the character(s) too little room to be developed.
Ultimately, a strong character development will lead to a strong plot.

Some people like to develop the story as a whole, but I prefer to develop the character first, followed by the story.
What this does is, it allows you to be more flexible with your story because you don't have to worry too much about the world setting.

An example of a strong character is one that has opposite values within the same character.
Fierce yet compassionate, want to die but cannot die = wolverine
Super spy with no knowledge of who or what he is = Jason Bourne
Super hero that saves the world but ultimately is still a playboy & billionaire = Tony Stark

Well... you get the idea...
Still not convinced? Let me share with you an idea that I worked on when I was studying a few years back.
Lets pull out a character most of us can relate to... Hmmm... A sniper!
Now what is a sniper super heavily reliant on?
Oh come on... Don't have to think so deep! Just keep it simple! What a sniper simply CANNOT do without. (yeah sure we can argue that he/she cannot be a sniper without a weapon system and yada yada yada... but come on! Don't need to think so hard)

A sniper cannot be proficient without good vision. Heck a sniper cannot be proficient if he/she is blind!
So now lets combine this 2 sets of value into 1 character.
Sniper + blind = a blind sniper

Now we just leave it to your imagination on how the story should be like.

Another important part of a story is the ending. If you can't get a good ending for your story, in the end its just crap.
Good story + Good ending = Awesome movie/short
Lousy story + Good ending = somewhat ok movie/short
Lousy story + Lousy ending = (do I really need to say...)
Good story + Lousy ending = What the hell?!

Next, I will discuss about how to go about creating a story (synopsis/idea) and script and point out what to look out for when you are doing it.
