Royal Navy Sea King ZA298, which has seen service for 30 YEARS, has been repaired after damage so severe it faced being scrapped.
The chopper — known as King of the Junglies — was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan.
It had previously survived combat in the Falklands War, Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq.
When Lieutenant Commander Simon Thornewill collected ZA298 from the manufacturer on November 13, 1981, there were only 11 flying hours on the clock.
He recalled: "It was very light and silky smooth. I put the next 250 hours on the clock in the Falklands War."
ZA298's closest brush with destruction came in June last year when an RPG blasted it just behind the pilot's head, wounding a Marine door gunner.
